A Major Museum Opening, and a Summer That Doesn't Need a Word of Korean

It is the hottest stretch of the year, and Seoul has arranged itself accordingly: this week's best plans are the ones that put you in an air-conditioned room in front of something worth looking at. For a resident who doesn't read Korean, that's not a compromise — it's the whole point. The strongest things happening this week are visual, sonic, or physical, and none of them ask you to follow a line of dialogue.

The one to build the week around opens on Thursday. At the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Samcheong-dong, the new commission in the museum's MMCA × LG OLED series is a solo show by Christine Sun Kim — a deaf Korean-American artist whose work turns sound, silence, and language itself into large-scale drawing and moving image. It opens July 31 and runs into late November.

There's a particular reason this show belongs at the top of a brief for non-Korean-speaking residents. Kim's entire practice is about the gap between a sound and the people who can't hear it — she builds her drawings out of musical notation, captions, and the flat language of instruction manuals, and the result reads on sight, in any language, with a wit that lands before you've read a wall text. It is, almost literally, a show about not sharing everyone else's language and making art out of the difference. For a resident who spends a lot of the week half-translating the city around them, that's an unusually direct hit. MMCA is a national museum with English throughout, so this is a walk-in-cold, read-on-sight afternoon in the cool center of town.

Around that opening, the week fills in along the same line — things that carry across without a language check. Down at Coex in Gangnam, two big weekend fairs land on the same floors: the Seoul Illustration Fair V.21 and URBAN BREAK & TOY CON, an art-toy-and-street-art double bill that's as browsable as it is buyable. In the concert halls, the marquee ticket is instrumental: the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the multi-Grammy jazz composer's big band, plays a single night at Lotte Concert Hall. And the last weekend of July stacks up a K-pop cluster — Red Velvet, B1A4, and N.Flying all playing Seoul across the same three days — while the baseball keeps running under the lights at Jamsil and Gocheok. None of it needs subtitles.

There is one large exception worth naming honestly. Seoul is also hosting the ASSITEJ International Summer Festival, the international children's-theatre festival, which opens across Jongno and Daehangno late in the week. It's genuinely international in origin — but the individual productions are Korean-language children's theatre, so unless you're bringing a Korean-speaking kid, it reads more as a thing happening near you than a thing to buy a ticket for. We cover it below with that caveat attached, because it shapes the week even if it isn't for everyone.

So the week has a clean shape for anyone planning it as a resident: a gallery or a fair in the heat of the afternoon, a hall or a stadium in the evening. Start Thursday in Samcheong-dong with Christine Sun Kim, and the rest of the summer falls into place around it.

Late in the week, the ASSITEJ International Summer Festival takes over a cluster of theatres across Jongno and Daehangno, Seoul's theatre district. It's run by the Korean branch of the international children's-and-youth theatre association, and the "international" is real. But here's the honest resident's note up front: the individual productions are staged in Korean, so their reward for a non-Korean-speaking adult is limited unless you're bringing a Korean-speaking child. Where the work leans on movement, puppetry, and paper rather than dialogue, the barrier drops — and a couple of these do.

The most language-light of the bunch

The clearest walk-in is ASSITEJ: Mr. Satie — A World Made of Paper (미스터 사티: 종이로 만든 세상) at the Arko Ggumbat Theater, Jul 28–30 — a visual, paper-and-object piece built around Erik Satie's music, which does much of its storytelling without words. Nearby, the festival also runs Ranrangbyeol Ttaettaerong (랑랑별 때때롱) at the Jongno Children's Theater, Jul 29–30 (35,000 won) — full children's theatre, and more language-dependent.

Across the same days the umbrella covers Blink, Hop Under the Moonlight! (깜박, 달빛 아래 폴짝!) at Modu Art Theater (Jul 29–31) and Gulliver's Travels: ZOOM IN OUT (걸리버 여행기) at the Seoul Theater Creation Center (Jul 30 – Aug 2). Separately, the Seoul Arts Center opens its own family-theatre run — 코 잃은 코끼리 코바 (Koba, the Elephant Who Lost His Nose) in the Jayu Theater from Jul 30. If you have kids in the house, this is your week; if you don't, treat it as texture rather than a ticket.

The House Concert's July Festival, four nights running

At Yegalgaui Jip (예술가의 집) near Daehangno, the long-running House Concert series stacks the closing week of its July Festival — a run of small-room chamber programs built around Messiaen, Debussy, and Ravel, one after another. Messiaen 1 plays Jul 28 , Debussy & Ravel Ensemble 4 on Jul 29 , Messiaen 2 on Jul 30 , and the FINALE on Jul 31. It's serious repertoire in a room where you sit close — a low-key, high-quality way to spend an evening on the north side of downtown.

A violin recital, and the jazz headliner

For a single-night classical option, violinist Kim Yeon-kyung plays a recital at the Sejong Chamber Hall on Jul 28 (all seats 30,000 won). And the week's marquee music, already in the picks, sits in this column too: the Maria Schneider Orchestra at Lotte Concert Hall on Jul 31 — one night of large-ensemble jazz from a composer who has won Grammys in both jazz and classical categories.

Exhibitions are where a non-Korean-speaking resident always has the deepest bench, and this week two openings frame the shift from summer into the fall season — both of them read on sight.

The headline opening

The one to plan around is MMCA × LG OLED Series 2026: Christine Sun Kim at MMCA Seoul, opening Jul 31 and running to Nov 29. Kim works in the museum's cavernous "Seoul Box" with the language of captions, notation, and sign — art that is literally about the space between a sound and the person who can't hear it, and that lands without translation. As a national museum, MMCA offers full English throughout.

A free sculpture opening, south of the river

The same weekend, the Seoul Museum of Art's Nam-Seoul branch opens Cho Sook-jin: A Place That Passes (조숙진: 지나가는 자리), a major Korean sculptor's show spread across the ground-floor outdoor space and the second-floor galleries, Jul 29 through Nov 15 — and it's free. Sculpture, outdoors and in, needs no wall text to work; pair it with the Christine Sun Kim opening for a museum weekend that costs little and reads clean.

The pop story is all in the coming weekend, when three separate acts light up three Seoul venues across the same three days (Jul 31 – Aug 2). It's a dense, plan-your-transit kind of weekend.

Three shows, three districts

The biggest draw is the Red Velvet FAN-CON at Korea University's Hwajung Gymnasium in Seongbuk (northeast) — reported sold out, so watch for resale. Out west, B1A4's 15th-anniversary concert "D-day" plays KBS Arena in Gangseo. And in the southeast, the band N.Flying's "&CON5: into REM" plays Jamsil — note the venue change: the show moved to the Jamsil Indoor Gymnasium (잠실실내체육관), and earlier bookings were cancelled and reissued, so buy against the current venue, not an old listing.

A quieter alternative

If the arena weekend isn't your speed, singer-songwriter Jung Joon-il opens a small-room summer residency, Piano, Summer, Voice, at Ewha Womans University's Yeongsan Theater from Jul 31 — intimate, piano-led, and a softer landing than a fan-con.

The art-fair double bill

The anchors are the two art fairs already in the picks: the Seoul Illustration Fair V.21 in Hall C (adults 15,000 won) and URBAN BREAK & TOY CON in Hall D — illustration on one floor, street art and designer toys on the next, both Jul 30 – Aug 2. On the same campus, the Sleep & Wellness Festa 2026 takes Hall B, Jul 30 – Aug 1 (free with online pre-registration, 10,000 won at the door) — a browse-and-sample consumer expo.

And one for families, up north

Off the Coex campus, the Seoul Science Museum Summer Festival in Nowon runs Jul 29 – Aug 2, free for all ages — a cool, hands-on afternoon that's an easy default for a family in the north of the city.

The KBO keeps a full home slate in the city. At Jamsil (Songpa), the LG Twins host the Kiwoom Heroes across the early week — Tue Jul 28 and Wed Jul 29 — with more Jamsil dates rolling into the weekend, while over at the Gocheok Sky Dome (Guro) the Kiwoom Heroes host SSG on Jul 31. A KBO night — cheer sheets, chants, fried chicken in the stands — is one of the most quintessentially local, lowest-barrier evenings in Seoul. Check team pages for the exact fixtures and tickets.

And the week's window opens with football: on Thu Jul 24, Seoul E-Land FC host Cheonan in the Hana Bank K League 2 at Mokdong Reul Park in Yangcheon (west Seoul), 19:30 kickoff — a low-key, easy-to-reach match to bookend the baseball.
