A New Photo Museum Opens in Dobong, and It's Free

Seoul spends this week indoors, and for once that's the point.

We Are Martin Parr — the inaugural exhibition at the new SeMA Photography Museum in Dobong

A New Photo Museum Opens in Dobong, and It's Free

The heat is on, the arena tours have moved out of town, and the city's cultural weight shifts to rooms with air conditioning and something worth looking at. The one to build the week around is brand new.

In Dobong — the far north of the city, not a neighborhood most residents think of for art — the Seoul Museum of Art's new Photography Museum opens its doors, and its inaugural show is We Are Martin Parr. It opened on July 16 and runs all the way through October 18, and admission is free. Because it's photography, there is nothing to translate — this is a show you can walk into cold, in any language, and read on sight.

A New Photo Museum Opens in Dobong, and It's Free

We Are Martin Parr — the inaugural exhibition at the new SeMA Photography Museum in Dobong

Parr is the British documentary photographer — a member of Magnum — who spent a career turning the ordinary into something you can't look away from: package holidays, supermarket queues, sunburned shoulders, food on paper plates, all shot in loud, saturated, deadpan colour. His subject was never the exotic; it was leisure, consumption, and crowds — the way ordinary people actually spend an ordinary day off. The show's title makes the point directly. We Are Martin Parr turns the camera back on the room: the tourists, the shoppers, the people fanning themselves in a queue are the exhibition. You come to look, and find you're also being looked at.

That makes it an unusually good lens for a Seoul summer. Aim Parr's eye at late July here and you get the whole scene — the plastic stools outside a convenience store, the parasols and clip-on neck fans, the crowds packed into a shaded plaza, the queue for shaved ice. His pictures hand you a way of seeing the season you're already living in, and a reason to spend a scorching afternoon somewhere cool doing exactly that. For a resident, that's the appeal over any single famous image: it reframes the everyday city you already move through.

The opening also matters beyond the one show. Seoul's art infrastructure has long clustered downtown and south of the river; a full public photography museum in Dobong plants serious, permanent exhibition space on the city's northern edge — and it opens free, which is not nothing in a summer of paid blockbusters. If you live up here, this is your new default for a hot afternoon. If you don't, it's worth the trip out: the museum keeps long hours — weekdays 10:00–20:00, weekends and public holidays 10:00–19:00 — so an evening visit, after the worst of the heat has passed, is easy to plan around dinner in the north of the city.

Around that opening, the week fills out along a clear line: this is a music-and-galleries week, not a stadium one. Downtown, a season of exhibitions marking 140 years of Korea–France relations runs across the center of town, while over in Yeouido the 63 Building has quietly turned into a museum floor of its own — a Cubism blockbuster at the new Pompidou Hanwha, with a permanent AI-media installation in the same lobby.

The Cubists: Inventing Modern Vision — Centre Pompidou × Hanwha at the 63 Building, Yeouido

The Cubists: Inventing Modern Vision — Centre Pompidou × Hanwha at the 63 Building, Yeouido

On the concert side, the back half of the week is unusually stacked: pianist Cho Seong-jin plays a Lotte Concert Hall recital, Lim Yunchan joins the KBS Symphony's 70th-anniversary program, Puccini's Turandot opens at the Seoul Arts Center, and the National Ballet takes over a black-box stage. So the week has a natural shape for anyone planning it: a gallery in the cool of the afternoon, a hall in the evening. Start in Dobong with Parr, and the rest of Seoul's summer falls into place around it.

140 years of France, spread across the summer city

The Cubists: Inventing Modern Vision, Centre Pompidou Hanwha

The season's connective thread runs through the galleries. 2026 marks 140 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and France, and the anniversary has seeded shows across central Seoul — from craft to modern painting. It's a self-guided route you can walk over a week, and being visual art, none of it asks you to read Korean.

Craft and portraiture, in the center

Start at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art in Jongno, where The Hybrid, a 140th-anniversary craft exhibition, runs free through July 26 — one of the last weeks to catch it. Nearby at the Seosomun Shrine History Museum, the anniversary special THE FACE: Facing Each Other is free and runs through September 6.

A palace show, and the Yeouido blockbuster

At Deoksugung Palace, Banhwa: An Auspicious Heart, a Korea–France 140th-anniversary special in the Dondeokjeon hall, runs through August 30 — the exhibition itself is free, though palace admission is charged separately. And the headline of the season sits in Yeouido: The Cubists: Inventing Modern Vision at the new Pompidou Hanwha, through October 4. From a craft museum to a palace hall to a 63-Building blockbuster, the French thread ties the summer's galleries into one route.

This is the densest stretch of stage music in weeks, and it splits neatly in two: a run of young musicians' debut and homecoming recitals early, then a wall of marquee names from Wednesday on. All of it instrumental or sung — the language barrier is effectively zero.

Young players, mid-week

The first half belongs to newcomers. At Kumho Art Hall Yonsei in Seodaemun, the Kumho Young Artist series runs back to back: Shin So-yeon's daegeum recital and Kim Ha-kyung's piano recital both on July 18, followed by Cho Seong-eum's homecoming violin recital on July 19. These are the kind of low-cost, high-ceiling programs — a first-rate hall, tickets far below a marquee concert — that reward a walk-in.

Marquee names, from Wednesday

Then the week turns heavyweight. Cho Seong-jin's recital at Lotte Concert Hall (Jul 19) leads into three Songpa/Seocho headliners: Puccini's Turandot opens at the Seoul Arts Center (from Jul 22, R 200,000 – D 30,000 won), the KBS Symphony's 70th-anniversary concert with Lim Yunchan lands at Lotte on July 22 (R 190,000 – C 30,000 won), and the Seoul Phil's Schubert 'Great' closes the week at Lotte on July 23.

And one for the jazz column

The week's lone jazz entry closes it out: the Gangnam Cultural Foundation's Thursday Arts Stage, OST & JAZZ Concert, at Gangnam Theater on July 23 — film-score standards played by a jazz orchestra, an easy evening on the south side of the river.

A weekend of dance, mostly traditional

Wol (Moon), Yun Sung-joo Dance Academy, National Gugak Center

With the drama season quiet, the week's stages belong to movement — and to Korean dance in particular. Being dance, it reads without a word of Korean.

Seocho: two nights of dance

The center of gravity is the National Gugak Center in Seocho. Wol (Moon), the founding performance of the Yun Sung-joo Dance Academy, plays the Yealak Theater on July 18–19 (R 50,000 / S 30,000 won) — traditional Korean dance built into a full-evening program. The same weekend, the dance program Chum, Hwachan runs in the center's Pungnyu Sarangbang through July 17 (30,000 won).

And the national company, in a black box

The lineup's marquee is the National Ballet's KNB Movement Series 10 at the Seoul Arts Center's Jayu Theater (Jul 18–19) — the company's experimental, choreographer-led series, staged small and close. From traditional dance to contemporary ballet, the week's stages move without language.

Summer moves to the water's edge

Seoul Summer Beach 2026, Gwanghwamun Square

As the heat peaks, the city's outdoor programs migrate toward water and evening cool — and most of them are free. This is the week's most walk-up-friendly track.

A downtown beach opens

The new arrival is Seoul Summer Beach, which sets up a downtown beach across Gwanghwamun Square and Sejongno Park from July 20 through August 9 — free, in the dead center of the city. Out west in Gangseo, the Seoul Botanic Park water-play area runs free through August 30, six sessions a day.

Evenings, outdoors and free

After dark, Moonlight Urban Yoga fills Gwanghwamun Square every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evening through August 31 — a free downtown session under the lights. And for the daytime, the Seoul Outdoor Library lays out free reading seats across City Hall Plaza, Gwanghwamun, and Cheonggyecheon through November 1 (daytime hours; the after-dark sessions pause in July–August).

The arena empties, the streets fill in

Sound Naru at Seoul, Korea-Japan Musician Story Showcase

The big touring shows have left town, so this week's pop runs free, small, and scattered across public squares and lunch-hour stages. It's a different density than a dome finale — and a good week to stumble into live music by accident.

The weekend showcase

The pick is Friday's Sound Naru @ Seoul: Korea–Japan Musician Story Showcase at Seogyo Square in Mapo (Jul 17) — a free cross-border showcase, and the marquee of a quiet week.

Daily and free, around town

Underpinning it all are the standing free stages. DDP Busking runs every day through July 31 (three sets daily, noon / 2 / 4 p.m.) in Dongdaemun, while Culture Flows at Seoul Plaza brings free early-evening concerts to City Hall's lawn. Over in Dongjak, the community-hall series Kkamangdol Cantabile plays a free afternoon program on July 18. No cover, no ticket queue — just turn a corner and there's a stage.

A quiet week, with one home match to anchor it

FC Seoul: home & away

Pro sport is in its summer lull, but football gives the week a fixed point. FC Seoul plays twice in the K League — once on the road, once at home — and the home date is the one to circle.

Home: Wednesday night in Mapo

On Wednesday July 22, FC Seoul host Pohang Steelers at Seoul World Cup Stadium in the Hana Bank K League 1 — a midweek home match, and the easiest live-sport option in the city this week. Catching a K League game is a low-barrier, quintessentially local night out; check ticket prices on the official page.

Away: the Sunday before

Three days earlier, on Sunday July 19, the same side play away at Bucheon FC — outside Seoul, at Bucheon Stadium, so it's a travel match rather than a home night. Between the two, the home fixture is the one worth the trip to Mapo.
